The Friendship Zone: Where Relationships Go to Blossom (or Wilt)

The Friendship Zone: Where Relationships Go to Blossom (or Wilt)

You know the Friendship Zone, right? No, I’m not talking about that place where romantic hopes go to die (though we’ve all been there, too). I’m talking about the space in our relationships where we let things coast—where we know and like someone, but forget that relationships are like a garden. And if you don’t tend to your garden, well, you’ll end up with a patch full of weeds, or worse, nothing at all.

Here’s the thing: Building a brand, especially one based on relationships, isn’t just about being that person who everyone likes. It’s about being the person people trust. And trust isn’t some magical thing that happens just because you’ve exchanged business cards or shared a few laughs at a networking event. Trust is a process—a process that requires time, energy, and a genuine desire to be there for someone, not just when you need something, but also when they do.

Think of trust as the rich, fertile soil in your relationship garden. Without it, nothing truly grows. Sure, you might have some superficial connections—like that one hardy weed that always seems to pop up no matter what—but meaningful, lasting relationships? Those need trust.

So, how do you build this trust? It’s not as complicated as you might think. Sometimes, it’s as simple as being available. I’m not talking about clearing your calendar for every coffee date (though coffee does work wonders), but about being present when it matters. When your client calls you up with a last-minute crisis or when your colleague needs a sounding board, that’s your moment to show up. These are the moments when trust takes root.

But don’t get too comfortable. Like any good gardener knows, the work is never done. You’ve got to keep showing up, keep being there, keep nurturing those relationships. Otherwise, that fertile soil you worked so hard to cultivate? It’ll dry up, and your garden will start looking a little sparse.

In the world of brand development, relationships are everything. They’re the foundation upon which your brand is built. And just like a garden, if you don’t tend to them, they won’t thrive. So, get your hands dirty. Put in the work. And watch your relationships, and your brand, blossom.

After all, who wants to hang out in a withered garden?
